Professor Weiss is a trainer in the Microbiology graduate program and the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Genetics. Students who have been admitted on either of these programs are encouraged to contact Dr. Weiss directly to discuss opportunities for doing a rotation in his laboratory.

Interested candidates with training in microbiology, biochemistry or a related field should contact Dr. Weiss directly.

Motivated undergraduates with an interest in basic research should contact Dr. Weiss directly.  Successful candidates will have to commit to working at least 12 hours per week spanning two semesters and a summer. Students doing research in the Weiss lab typically obtain academic credit by registering one of two research courses – MICR:4161 Undergraduate Research In Microbiology, or MICR:4171 Honors Research in Microbiology. Partial funding may be available through Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates (ICRU).

Professor Weiss is co-director of a summer research program (REU) for undergraduates interested in pursuing graduate work in microbiology or a related field. Please note this program is intended primarily for students from small colleges where research opportunities are not available.  If that describes you, please consider applying!  Applications from students at major research institutions, including The University of Iowa, will be considered these students are not usually selected for the REU because they have other avenues for obtaining research experience.
